Sacristans primarily assist our priests in preparing what is necessary for Mass. This role is typically behind the scenes and discrete, which presents the unique opportunity of working around the Blessed Sacrament. This can be for weekday or weekend Masses and we can always use more volunteers, with the goal of being able to rotate among a group.
Typical Responsibilities
Unlock and prepare the church before Mass: Turn on lights and sound system, set up for the priest chalice, bread, wine and water cruets, lighting candles before Mass)
Afterwards, extinguishing candles, some light cleaning of vessels and linens, and resetting for the next Mass, tuning down lights
Depending on the day, locking up what is necessary to secure the sacristy and church
Requirements
Baptized and confirmed Catholic in good standing
Member of St. Mark Parish
Completion of Archdiocesan background check and Protecting God’s Children training
Comfortable with basic kitchen-like tasks (no cooking required)
Able to serve at least twice a month
